EMMA NEVILLE

MA, MPhil, PGDIP, MBACP

I am a BACP Registered Psychotherapist working with adult individuals in Cambridge (CB1) and online.

I work with adult individuals who are seeking deeper understanding of themselves, their experiences, and their context.

If you have questions about starting psychotherapy with me, you are very welcome to email me at: emmanevillepsychotherapy@outlook.com

It matters that you find a therapist who feels right for you. With this in mind, I offer a free 20 minute zoom call to discuss if we might be a good fit.

Is therapy right for me?

Life can be difficult and confusing. Many people find it helpful to talk with another person about the difficult feelings, experiences, and situations that life throws at us.

I offer a confidential, non-judgemental space to reflect on your life and experiences, with the aim of helping you to make sense your situation.

My approach

I primarily work with a style of therapy called existential psychotherapy. This means that my approach is primarily grounded in existential philosophy and ethics. I also regularly integrate feminist and de-colonial therapy perspectives into my work.

Existential therapy does not seek to interpret the challenges of human existence through the lens of disorder or illness. Rather, it invites us to notice, describe and honour our unique ways of responding to life’s dilemmas.

While each therapy process unfolds differently, at the heart of any therapy process is the relationship we build together. I aim to facilitate a relationship that feels warm, open, and honest. Under these conditions, a unique kind of dialogue can emerge - one that helps us to listen to and better understand our experience of the world.

Under these conditions, we tend to find ourselves able to face complex questions of being human with renewed courage, compassion and clarity. These questions might have to do with how you find yourself in the world, how your past experiences inform your present, what matters to you, and how you relate to others.

 FAQs

  • Psychotherapy and counselling are talking therapies, which means the therapist and client work through speaking to one another.

Some practitioners differentiate between psychotherapy and counselling based on how long-term the work is and the extent to which it is focussed on specific issues. I use the broader term “therapy” to describe all of these approaches.

I’m happy to work with you on either a short- or long-term basis, depending on your wishes and needs. It is for you to decide which areas of your life you want to explore in therapy, and this can naturally shift as our work together unfolds.

The fundamentals of the process involve us both making a commitment: to meet for 50 minutes each week, to sit together and talk.

Throughout the process, I aim to curate an environment that feels warm, safe, and honest. My belief is that, in this kind of environment, we are better able to attend to the messier parts of our experience, better able to stay with the difficult questions, and better able to learn from experiences.

  • This is a wise question to ask, as it is important to feel comfortable with your therapist. You may wish to speak with more than one therapist before making a commitment.

We can start with a free 20 minute call.  This is a chance for us to find out a little about each other and see if we both feel comfortable working together.

During this call, you can get a sense of my approach and style, ask any questions about the process, and we can also clarify fees and potential session arrangements.

If it feels right, we can then arrange a 50-minute initial session and begin our work together.

  • Depending on your preferences and availability, we can meet online or in-person.

If you’d like to meet in person, this would be in Central Cambridge - just off Mill Road and about 15 minutes walk from Cambridge Central Station.

  • I offer a free 20 minute call to see if we might be a good fit. Thereafter, we will meet for 50 minutes a week. Each session is charged at £75.

  • Our first session is a bit different from other sessions. It is a shorter meeting, and primarily an opportunity for us to get to know each other and see if we feel comfortable working together.

I’ll ask some questions about your background and what’s brought you to therapy. We’ll touch on your hopes and expectations for therapy.

During this call, you can get a sense of my approach and style, ask any questions about the process, and we can also clarify fees and potential session arrangements.
